NEW YORK FASHION WEEK A/W 2014 DAY 1

Some highlights from Day 1 of New York Fashion Week.

One of my favourite designers, BCBGMAXAZRIA, is back this year with another eye catching collection. The floaty siholeutees we witnessed from designer last year have returned. The colours were very muted and kept suitable for the Autumn/Winter seasons. Many of the pieces had long sleeves which were slightly oversized. There was an interesting geometric style to the clothes with the shapes being broken up with some strips of colour. The thicker, heavier fabrics really suited the styles created and will work well in the Fall season.

Creatures of Comfort is a new brand to me this year. I LOVED this collection. The pieces were oversized, heavy and stylish. The designs were simple in their silhouettes but this really did make the collection ready to wear. Some of my favourite pieces were the coats on show. They were an oversized, boy friend style with a simple cut and shape to them. They were long in length which worked well with this oversized look. I also really liked the edition of the scarfs which look super comfy and cosy, perfect for the colder months. Overall, I was thoroughly impressed by Creature of Comfort and I am looking forward to checking out some of their other previous collections.

Another beautiful collection by Tadashi Shoji. With a bright cobalt blue featuring on many of the pieces it really stood out against many of the collections shown on this first day of fashion week. This was a more glamorous collection compared to many others we have seen on this first day and focused much more on dresses and evening wear, compared to the usual pieces we may expect for the Autumn/Winter season. As with their Spring/Summer 2014, there were many pieces which used a lighter, lacier fabric. One of the stand out pieces from this collection was a black full length gown (pictured above, far right) where the top of the dress was a basic t-shirt shape created from velvet. I thought it worked really well to create a piece that was simple yet elegant.

Marissa Webb has really impressed me this season. There are so many pieces that I would love to have in my closet right now. From the skirts to the blazers there was a piece of outfit from every look that caught my eye. There were a few more out there pieces to this collection but over the styles were all incredibly wearable. There was a great mix of both trousers and skirts creating a varied collection that worked as a whole. With a good mix of pattern fabrics and block colors being used there were a variety of pieces for different styles on offer. I also really loved the fresh make up look as well as the messy hair dos. I found they really worked well with the look of the clothes and gave them a more casual look to the smarter pieces.

Richard Chai showed of a collection that was put together extremely well. There was a bohemian style edge to some of these pieces with skirts being kept loose and floaty, even those the fabrics were slightly heavier to fit the season. There was a great of pieces that suited both smarter and more casual circumstances. The colours were kept simple and muted with a nice mix of different brown shades being used. I also really liked the jackets that were featured as part of this collection. The leather jacket was a great shape but the one that caught my eye was the camel coat (pictured top row, far left). The cut of the jacket looks extremely flattering and the colour worked incredibly well with the rest of the palette for the collection. Overall, there were many, many pieces from these outfits that I would wear and I hope that the high street takes some inspiration from this collection when we see what hits stories in Fall this year.

Summary
I am hugely impressed all ready with the collections that are on offer from New York Fashion Week. There has already been a great variety in both the style and patterns on offer as well as plenty of pieces that could easily be worn straight from the catwalk.
There were  quite a lot of browns and taupe on display today. Along with checks they could be an early look at some of the trends we can expect to see on the high street and throughout many designer pieces this year for Autumn/Winter.

I hope you enjoyed this post let me know your thoughts below! Have you checked out any of the NYFW coverage? You can watch live the majority of the shows live here as well as checking out what the rest of the website has to offer.
